Lentils anyone?

Hey hey everyone,

It’s been a long time since I’ve written something for you.
Between my last post and now I had been juggling work, an unpaid internship, finishing up my Masters and most recently moving apartments (yes, I have moved yet again!). But the storm has finally begun to calm down and although I don’t see myself having a lot of free time for the next few days(maybe even a week or two), I shall try and be more frequent at posting articles (key word here :TRY).

Besides the above said reasons, another factor that put me off writing for a bit was simply the lack of something worthwhile to write about.
That is, until now.

Yesterday was my day off from work and I had intended on getting some shopping done for my new bedroom. I called some of my friends to come join me on this task because shopping is fun in numbers and also, I get super confused when shopping! I decided to head to Broadway Shopping Center and get my things from Target and Adairs.
An hour into shopping, we started to get hungry. So we put the rest of the shopping on hold and decided to take a drive up to Newtown in search of a good restaurant. This task proved to be even more difficult than shopping! And this is because one of my friends is vegan while the rest of us aren’t (I am an on-and-off vegan/vegetarian. I like to eat healthy and therefore have begun to eat a lot more veggies and a lot less meat/dairy/dairy products). After what felt like an endless debate of where to eat, we decided to go to a vegan restaurant that one of my non-vegan friends suggested.
The next seemingly impossible task came almost immediately. Finding this restaurant was not exactly easy as my friend neither knew the name of it nor where its precise location was. All he could remember was that it had a red sign-board and that it was crowded with people the last time he drove by it. Not exactly the best leads in the world and for a while I did think we were on a wild goose chase.
Finally we did manage to find the restaurant and it was, LENTIL AS ANYTHING. Not only was their sign-board a daring red but so was the entire outside wall. The menu board placed outside boasted some of the healthiest vegan/vegetarian dishes. And truth be told, I was highly doubtful that any of it would fill my stomach. I was convinced however, that it would definitely make my wallet a lot slimmer (because it’s a vegan/vegetarian restaurant in Sydney, enough said). Boy, was I wrong on both accounts!
We ordered two of their Mexican beans with cooked barley & salad and one of their broccoli and corn bake dishes (I can’t remember the name of it, sorry!:( ). After an anxious wait of 8-10 minutes, our food arrived. While it looked to be delicious, the portion size affirmed my initial doubts of it fulfilling my appetite. I dug into it thinking that it would be easy-peasy and that I’d have room for more. But the Mexican beans intended to prove me wrong. In the end, the beans won and I happily and gracefully accepted defeat. The best part was that unlike a meat-filled meal, this scrumptious lunch did not make me feel sluggish afterwards. It instead left me with a pleasant feeling of having had a hearty meal that was both tasty and healthy.

But what makes LENTIL AS ANYTHING a great restaurant is not just its food but what comes after. Now, not having inquired about the prices I was ready to fork out a pretty hefty amount. But when the waitress nonchalantly said that we could pay (or rather “donate”) WHATEVER amount we felt was appropriate, at first I was confused and then surprised. This restaurant had a Pay-What-You-Feel-Like policy; the first time I’ve ever come across something like it. It functions on the principle that “customers give what they feel the food is worth and have the opportunity to contribute towards a world where respect, generosity, trust, equality, freedom and kindness rule”. Customers can donate anything from $2 and above and this helps pay the wages, rent etc. And did I mention that the staff at this place comprise of volunteers?

I think this is a fantastic initiative of serving the community by generous community members through the powerful tool that is FOOD. Founded by Shanaka Fernando, LENTIL AS ANYTHING was first started in St.Kilda, Melbourne and its immense success led to the opening of 3 other outlets before they finally arrived to inner-city Sydney. And I am sure there are many like my friends and I who are extremely happy with this decision.
After speaking to two of their friendly volunteers, I have decided to provide my services as a community member someday soon.

I strongly urge all my readers in Sydney and Melbourne to give LENTIL AS ANYTHING a try, if you haven’t already. Even if you are not a vegetarian or a vegan I’m sure you will enjoy the meals that are definitely cooked with love. Not only that, but you would also be helping this restaurant serve its lesser fortunate community members with healthy, delicious and very affordable food.
And if you are considering volunteering for them, do take a look at their website, facebook page or simply ask one of their enthusiastic and very friendly volunteers of the procedure. Trust me; it is not a complicated or elaborate process at all.

All in all, I give LENTIL AS ANYTHING a 5/5 rating and I wish to thank them and its patrons, volunteers and suppliers for their amazing contribution to the community as well as for giving me a strong reason to write again! I wish them luck and success and hope they continue to spread the spirit of community in more parts of Australia. I once again urge all my Melbourne and Sydney based supporters to go and check out this fabulous food-joint.

Till we meet again with another article,

Saturday bliss + OOTD/OOTN

Hey there people,

How are you? Hope you are all enjoying your weekend. I know I am.

I am so pleased with how my day turned out today! The sun was out, the skies were clear and albeit some strong winds, it wasn’t freezing cold outside. So I decided to take advantage of the weather and took a stroll to the Growers Market in Pyrmont.

For those of you who haven’t been to the Growers Market, I suggest you do so next month. It is something you shouldn’t miss if you are in Sydney. It happens on the first Saturday of every month and is located by Sydney Harbor at the picturesque Pyrmont Bay Park. Here, you can find a wide variety of stalls selling everything from, fresh fruits and vegetables to venison, pork, seafood and wine! A lot, if not all, of their products are fresh and organic which is definitely a huge plus in my opinion.

The 30 minute walk down to the market got me super hungry and so as soon as I reached, I decided to grab a nice cup of Hot Chocolate, to begin with. I bought it from the Columbian Connection stall, of which I hadn’t heard of until I got there. The best thing about this hot chocolate (aside from the fact that it was HOT CHOCOLATE) was that it was a 100% organic; much like their coffees! Most of the people in line were there for the coffees but I’m not exactly a coffee person so I opted for the hot chocolate instead. And boy was it a great decision.
After grabbing my chocolatey goodness, I next hit the lukbeautifood stand. I was intrigued by their Cold pressed juices and smoothies options that consisted of; Revitalise (with apple, beetroot, ginger and lemon), Super Skin Milk (with almonds, cardamom, cinnamon, dates, filtered water, nutmeg, sea salt and vanilla bean) and Antioxidant Boost (with blueberry, pomegranate, red grape and coconut water). I picked up a bottle of Revitalise, because of the amazing colour of the beets, as well as a Super Skin Milk, because I love almond milk (duh)!
I also picked up one of their Breakfast Bars. Now, I’ve tasted a lot of snack bars and granola bars from the stores, but this one is hands down the best thing I’ve ever had! Each bar is filled with omega 3 rich seeds, nuts, dates, lemon zest and coconut oil. Good for your health and definitely good for the taste buds! This combined with my Organic Hot Chocolate made for the best brekkie.

Here’s a picture of my yummy ‘kick-starter’ breakfast for this morning.

IMG_20140705_121740

After roaming around for a while, my next halt was the Rowie’s Cakes stand. Again, I didn’t know of Rowie’s Cakes until today. But I’m glad I found them! They make some very yummy (and yes, as you guessed, HEALTHY) desserts and confectionaries. After deliberating between their cupcakes, rocky road bites and snack bars, I decided to buy a box of Rowie’s Rocky Road Bites. These delicious cocoa bites are allergy-free (wheat free, gluten free, dairy free, yeast free, egg free and nut free) so it is good for those who react negatively to any of the said substances. I myself am allergic to gluten and dairy (my skin is highly sensitive) and this was truly a delight to find because I have such a huge sweet tooth. And if you aren’t allergic to any of these, I suggest you still pick up one of these boxes. I mean, who can resist the combination of dark chocolate and marshmallows!?

I ended my trip by grabbing some fresh veggies for the week and headed for a flat viewing.

All in all I had such a great time at Growers Market and am looking forward to heading there next month! Make sure to note the date in your calendars because you do NOT want to miss it!

And now, for my OOTD and OOTN.

For my OOTD, I chose to wear my ASOS Cable Jumper in the colour Oatmeal. I really like how the jumper fits on me (I wear a size M) and the color compliments dark skin guys very well. I teamed this up with my blue stretch skinnies from Topman (you guys might’ve seen this in my last OOTN blogpost) and my Metro Shoes Zip-Up Converse. To beat the harsh winds I wrapped my Topman loop scarf around my neck. I finished the look with my glossy black Ray-Ban Wayfarer Sunglasses, which was a birthday present from my dad (thanks dad!). I also threw my maroon ASOS cardigan in my messenger bag (also from ASOS. Yes, I shop on ASOS a lot :P) just in case it got too chilly.

OOTD(SaturdayBliss)

For my OOTN, I am going for a smart casual look. I am wearing my ASOS long sleeve T-shirt in the color Green Marl and layering it with my teal corduroy blazer from RDX. I purchased this blazer last year for my 23rd birthday party.
I paired this up with the same jeans I wore in the morning along with my black suede shoes from ZU Shoes. I finished the look with my stainless steel Pulsar watch (that I purchased from Melbourne) and by spraying on some Blue de Chanel which was a gift from sister from New York.

OOTN (SaturdayBliss)

The look for the night is ready! Now, all I need to figure out is where I want to go for dinner and where my friends want to go clubbing #firstworldproblems

Hope you guys liked yet another post from yours truly. Have a great night and I’ll be back again next week with yet another post. Stay tuned!

SMH: Beyond Belief

Hello there good people,

Let me start by apologizing for not posting anything on Monday. I have been super busy of late, with both work and apartment hunting taking most of my time. I thought graduating from university would give me some more free time, but I guess not.

Anyways, without further ado, let me start off today’s article. My initial post was supposed to be something entirely different from what is written below. However, after typing down the first part of my article I felt that I should stick with just that and omit the rest of it. So I did.

And why have I titled it, ‘SMH: Beyond Belief’? Well, read on and you’ll know.

This morning I woke up to find out that, the most trending news article is that Jeremy Meeks – the internet dubbed ‘Hot Felon’– has signed a $30,000 modeling contract! What in the world!?

Jeremy Meeks

Here is a little background information on Meeks for those of you who don’t know who he is. Meeks is a convicted felon currently serving jail time in San Joaquin County Jail. He has against him, charges of weapons possession, gang membership and probation violation. He was recently pulled over by authorities and a search of his car yielded a 45 caliber semiautomatic handgun, ammunition and a small amount of marijuana.
Meeks shot to fame last month, when his mug shot went viral all over the internet. I stumbled upon his photo while surfing through Tumblr. Many memes have been created out of his mug-shot, with most of them replacing his plain white T-shirt with designer suits. If you read most of the comments surrounding his photo, you will notice that they are all about his “chiseled face and baby blue eyes”. And these are the features that his current agent, Gina Rodriguez, is cashing on. She believes that his past should not affect his bright future.

While I agree to some extent with that, I personally feel that unless Jeremy Meeks has really turned a new leaf and has decided to contribute positively to society in some way, he doesn’t deserve the recognition he is getting right now; especially when they are purely based on his looks.
But then again just by looking at Gina Rodriguez’s clientele, you can get a vague idea of this woman and why she represents those that she does. Fox News reported that Rodriguez has “guided the careers of Teen Mom-star-turned-porn-star Farrah Abraham, Nadya ‘Octomom’ Suleman, and most recently, V. Stiviano, the woman at the center of the Donald Sterling scandal.” And I’m sure that in each case she believes that the individual’s past should not affect their ‘bright’ future.

*Slow clap* for Ms. Rodriguez. Sigh!

If you ask me; if anyone deserves to gain recognition and modeling contracts it should be this guy.

Kyle Carpenter

Retired Marine Cpl. Kyle Carpenter.

Carpenter received the Medal of Honor – United States’ highest military honor- for trying to rescue a fellow Marine from a grenade thrown at them during a firefight in Afghanistan. In the process he lost his right eye and most of his teeth. His jaw and right arm were also shattered and he had to undergo several reconstructive surgeries.
Now this right here is a true a hero. I don’t understand how he hasn’t received as much attention as Meeks has! Is this really what today’s society has become? How has this man not received a $30,000 modeling contract?! I mean, look at him.
That right there is not only a very handsome man, but also a very courageous one.

I understand that the Fashion and Modeling industry is primarily concerned with physical appearances. And I’m not denying that Jeremy Meeks is an attractive dude. But by this very act, the industry sends out a message to many out there, that no matter what you do or how harmful you are to society, you will nonetheless be glorified if you simply LOOK GOOD.

And this is precisely why I titled the article, ‘SMH: Beyond Belief’.

So that was my rant for today. Let me know if you agree or disagree with my views. Also if you happened to come across similarly bizarre news stories, do let me know.

Till next time,

More music your way

Hey there people,

Okay, so my post for today wasn’t supposed to be related to music but I couldn’t help it. If you have read my previous post, Outfit of the day/Outfit of the night, you would have known that I had gone out with some of my friends last night. As per usual, we were aimlessly driving around town in our friends car, when I happened to hear an amazing cover of Whitney Houston’s How Will I Know.
Now, if you go on YouTube you’ll be able to find a plethora of Whitney Houston covers and some of them are really good. But this was by far the best cover I have heard in a long time. And of course, who else should sing it other than my current favorite artist, Sam Smith.

I know what some of you might be thinking; can Sam Smith do a good dance-pop cover? And the answer is, “I don’t know”, because he didn’t stick with the original genre. The singer/songwriter put his own spin to the number by slowing down the tempo and making it more soulful and melancholic. And I just love it!

Check out the cover he did for Sirius XM and let me know what YOU think about his rendition. Hopefully, you will enjoy it as much as I do.

P.S: If you have something nasty to say, spare me.

Beat them Blues!

Good Morning good people,

I hope you had a great weekend. Mine seemed to have gone by too quickly. I guess that’s probably because I spent the whole of Saturday recovering from a hangover!

Anyhooo, we’ve entered yet another week in our lives and as much as we’d like to be thankful and cheery, it is simply impossible to do so on a Monday morning. So I’m here to help you out.

Below is a list of songs that I think would help you beat the Monday Blues and put you in a much better mood for work, uni or whatever else you may have lined up for the rest of the day. Most, if not, all of these are on repeat on my playlist every morning!

First up is a track called Together by Disclosure, Nile Rogers, Jimmy Napes and Sam Smith. My current favorite; this song is just 2 and half minutes of pure sexy awesomeness.

The second one would most definitely have to be Say Yes by Michelle Williams ft. Beyonce and Kelly Rowland. It is so good to see the trio together again, this time supporting Michelle’s gospel number. Regardless of what your beliefs might be, this song will definitely put a positive spin to your day with its peppy beats.

Next is a song that I’ve been obsessed with, for a while now. Hence it’s only fair that I put it on the list. Here is Like the Morning Dew by Laura Mvula. I honestly believe that she deserves more popularity.

Okay, so I might be a little late to the party with the fourth one but, better late than never right? This is Rather Be by Clean Bandit ft. Jess Glyne.

I’m not late with this one though. This is their most recent single titled Extraordinary ft. Sharna Bass.

Who doesn’t like a bit of Ariana Grande? This one’s called Problem by Ariana Grande ft. Iggy Azalea.

Speaking of Iggy Azalea, my list wouldn’t be complete if I didn’t include Fancy by Iggy Azalea ft. Charli XCX. How funny is the Clueless inspired music video!

Since I started the list with Sam Smith, I thought it would be appropriate to end it with another one of his tracks. This ballad titled Stay with Me shows just how good Smith’s vocal skills are.

So, hope you guys enjoy my Monday morning playlist! If you have any suggestions, I would love to hear them. It’s always great discovering new music.

Till next time,

Check Please!

Mornin everybody!

Hope ya’ll are doin mighty fine this Friday morning (I have no idea why I’ve suddenly gone Texan on you)! I’m feeling extra chirpy this morning and I am going to send out positive vibes to all of you, no matter where you are!
Today, I am going to do a review on a restaurant I visited recently. It is the Essenza Italian on Surry Hills.

Disclaimer: This is not a professional review but merely me sharing my experience at the restaurant, with some awesome readers. Also, I am not being paid by the restaurant to do so.

Hope that has helped put a lot of suspicious minds at ease. Now, moving on…
I happened to stumble upon Essenza’s Instagram account after they liked one of my pictures (obviously involving food!). I was just blown away by their pictures of yummy Risotto Marinara, Calamari Fritti, various meatball dishes and what not! Now those of you that know me well know that I have a weak spot for anything Italian, especially their food! So it was only obvious that I wanted to give Essenza Italian a try.

Wednesday night, my friend and I decided to catch up for dinner and I of course suggested we go to Essenza. Hardly a 15 minute walk from Broadway, the restaurant is comfortably nestled in the corner of Crown and Devonshire Street in Surry Hills. The restaurant isn’t very imposing architecture- wise, neither does it have a huge sign, which may cause a little difficulty in spotting it right away (especially at night). But once you find it, you will only be pleased to see that it in fact has a very cozy feel; both from the outside as well as the inside, as I found out later.

We were greeted to a very warm and romantic setting with dozen dimly lit candles all around. I did feel a little awkward being there with one of my closest-friends instead of a date, but then I realized I have way more fun with my friend anyway!

From the moment we were seated I was excited to go through their menu and see what they had to offer. However, when it finally arrived I must say I was quite disappointed. I couldn’t find many of the dishes that I saw on their Instagram page, on their menu. Maybe I was there at the wrong time? Or perhaps they have a different menu for larger groups where the other dishes are? In any case, I was quite bummed out.
They did however have some interesting items like Roast Lamb Rump with Caponata, Veal Involtini & Parmesan Polenta etc. After deliberating for what seemed like half an hour (we’re indecisive and talkative so, go figure) we finally decided to start off with some garlic bread for the table and then, I proceeded to opt for the Essenza Meatballs in Polenta (which is actually an antipasto :P) while my friend settled for the Spaghetti Marinara.

While we were waiting for our food to arrive, I noticed larger groups of people starting to come in and I was actually worried that it might get too noisy. Although the restaurant extends to an outdoor area at the back, the weather conditions were not exactly motivating enough for anyone to use it. I was however, pleasantly pleased that the atmosphere hadn’t changed despite the increase in customers. It seemed like everyone was respectful of the decorum of the restaurant as well as of other visitors. This gave my friend and me the opportunity to talk endlessly about completely random things, as we always do.
I wished I was sipping on some red wine while waiting but my throat wouldn’t have any of it, so I asked for some warm water instead. Now, one of the things that annoy me when I go to restaurants in Sydney is that most of them do not offer warm/hot water (which I will never understand!). However, not only did these guys offer to bring me hot water, but they brought it in a cute little tea-pot.
We were then served our garlic bread which came on a wooden serving board. The bread looked absolutely yummy; nice and crisp with a beautiful golden color. The downside to it was that we only got three slices of bread, which I thought was quite unfair considering that it tasted so good hahaha. They should probably consider increasing the portion to an even four!

Next we were served our main course (well in my case, antipasto). I was very content with my Essenza Meatballs in Polenta. I hadn’t tried the combination of meatballs and polenta before, but I loved it. The polenta was soft and had an almost buttery texture. The meatballs were cooked to the right amount and the sauce had a delectable tanginess to it. And for an antipasto, I must say it was quite filling.
My friend seemed pleased with her Spaghetti Marinara as well. I liked the fact that they sprinkled a generous amount of Parmesan and pepper on top while serving it. For those of you who are not cheese fans, do not worry, they ask you before-hand if you would like it or not. So you do have the option of skipping it.
I finished my meal with some hot peppermint tea (they do have quite a bit of options to select from, in the tea department). Although I would’ve loved nothing better than to indulge in some decadent Tiramisu or Panna Cotta, my throat like I said earlier, was being a stubborn jackass!
The tea helped a lot though. So for those of you out there with a scratchy throat, I recommend some hot peppermint tea.

At the cash register we were given bite-sized desserts (I forgot the name of it) which I thought was a pretty clever and innovative move of extending their customer-service till the exit. The price was not as fancy as the restaurant, which was definitely a plus sign.

All in all I was happy with my experience at Essenza Italian. The food is absolutely delicious; kudos to the chef! And the staff seemed nice and friendly. The atmosphere like I said is perfectly set for a romantic dinner. I’d definitely recommend this as a date place. However, if you’re single like me you can always rock up with your friends and have a good time. If you plan on going with a large group on a weekend, I would recommend booking in advance.
The only major drawback I found was the lack of choices on their menu, especially after you’ve looked at their Instagram account. Next time, I hope to clarify that with them.

Yes, there definitely is going to be a next time. And when that happens, I pray that my throat doesn’t act up so I can devour some yummy tiramisu!

I hope you guys enjoyed my little review of Essenza Italian. I give them a huge thumbs up and I recommend it to all of you that are looking for a new restaurant to head to.

With that thought, I bid you goodbye.
Have a Happy Friday! If you’re having a particularly tough day, just power through because the weekend is not far away!

Till next time. BYEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

THANK YOU FOR THE SUPPORT!!!!!!!

Sooooo guess who’s back from nearly a year’s hiatus! Yep, it’s your very own sporadic blogger.

First of, let me apologize for going under the radar all this while. As some of you may know I’ve been working and studying in Sydney for the past two years. And I’m happy to say that I’m finally free from half of the pressure, ie studying. I wrote the last of my exams yesterday and I had never felt more satisfied leaving an examination hall, for the sheer fact that I would never have to write an exam ever again!

Second of all, I’d like to thank everyone who has stuck by me and my little blog since the beginning. I started out with 20 odd followers, most of whom comprised of supportive family and friends 😛 But after almost a year and a half of little or no writing, I came back to a whopping 600 or so followers! It is truly heart-warming! And it is this love and support that has motivated me to come back.

Image

So that being said, I’m happy to announce that starting this week, I’m going to post a lot more for you guys. As of now I’m hoping to write at least two days a week and be consistent at that. I’ve also got a few other things in mind for my blog but it’s too soon to talk about it. So keep a look out for more updates 🙂

And finally, if there is anything you would like me to write about, do let me know. I love hearing from you and expanding my horizon on topics to write about. You can always reach me on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram (the links are on the Homepage).

Have an amazing day wherever you are! KBYEEEEEEEE

Goodbye is but a temporary thing

Hey there charming people,

It’s been way too long. Trust you’ve all been good while I was gone.

Today’s post is quite bittersweet to me. To begin on a happy note; it feels great to write again after an awfully long break. Also, it’s a good friend’s birthday today and I’d like to give her an S/O:

“HAPPY BIRTHDAY FLAVIE!!!” Can’t wait for tonight’s festivities Frenchy!

Ok, now onto the bitter part of the post; Last night, I had to say goodbye to my Spanish flatmate of 6 months. Fernando wasn’t just moving out of the apartment, he was travelling all the way back home to Spain, which made it even harder to say goodbye.
The people that know me very well know that I am the worst at saying goodbyes. It is the most awkward thing ever. You know the conversation you were having with the other person has come to an end and there’s nothing more left to say but that ‘dreaded word’, yet you don’t want to be the first to say it for the fear of seeming rude. Unfortunately, someone has to say it and once it’s said, you go your separate ways. It was no different last night. We talked about a lot of things, his first week in the apartment, our travel plans, crazy party stories and so on. Finally, we had the typical ‘bro-hug’, bid each other goodbye and went back to our rooms.
As I climbed into bed, I thought how hard it was going to be for me to do this with other friends of mine, who are in Sydney only for a short while. You find people who you can get along with on many levels, spend huge portions of your days with them, share insane stories and lame inside jokes and then one fine day it all comes to an end and one of you has to pack your bags and move miles away. It is unfair. And all you can do is assure each other that you’ll stay in touch and hopefully meet again soon.

I know I sound like downer today and wish I had a happy moral or solution to all those who have come across similar situations. All I can say is that when you travel miles away from your home, family and familiar surroundings and embark on a new journey, the friends that you make along the way become extended members of your family. Cherish each moment with them while it lasts and try to avoid unnecessary drama. If problems occur along the way, talk them out. If you’ve made mistakes, keep your egos aside and apologize for it will only make you a better person. And if the other person apologizes, learn to forgive and forget. This way, when the day comes to finally part ways, you can do so with a clear conscience and remember all the good things that you and your friends have shared.
Also, remember to keep in touch as much as you can. Who knows someday you just might end up meeting your friend in some corner of the world, for I strongly believe that goodbye is only but a temporary thing.

So until my next post,
You know what.
